How El Contractor is building sustainability into the foundations of our work
Since starting El Contractor, we were shocked by the amount of plastic waste a small painting business can generate. Looking at the wider industry, it’s clear the problem is much bigger than us.
The building industry is one of the largest contributors to plastic waste—yet most of this waste could be reused, repurposed, and regenerated.
That’s why we launched Made to Regenerate: a project dedicated to recycling painting buckets and other building plastics in collaboration with building management companies and painting brands.
Validated but Facing Setbacks
Our project was validated by Callaghan Innovation during the discovery phase and even received approval to move forward.
Unfortunately, due to recent government cuts, the next funding round was cancelled.
But here’s the thing: we’re not giving up.
Our Next Step: Industrial Shredder Campaign
Instead of asking for donations, we’re choosing a more sustainable path. We’re launching a campaign to purchase an industrial shredder, a crucial tool that will allow us to turn discarded building plastics into raw materials ready for reuse.
The shredder costs US$7,800.00 (approximately NZ$13,330.49 ) and we’re inviting partners to be part of this journey.
How We’re Funding It
Here’s how we’re making Made to Regenerate happen:
- 5% of the revenue from our property services will be directed towards Made to Regenerate.
- Every company that supports this campaign will be acknowledged on our website, blog, and social media—because change is only possible when it’s collective.
